Sand Martin Wood: Information
Tree Tags ·
The village of Faugh in Cumbria is almost halfway between The Lake District and the Northumberland National Park. Sand Martin Wood is just outside the village and gets its name from the large colony of Sand Martins that nest nearby in the sandy hillside. The land was acquired by co2balance in September 2006. The majority of the land has been sown with a typical pasture seed mix and had been managed in such a way as to produce a monoculture that did little for biodiversity. Afforestation of the former agricultural land is now underway and it is expected that a woodland of 6 hectares will have been created alongside a 3 hectare County Wildlife Site that is also in our control. The land and trees will remain in the ownership of co2balance and will be managed for the benefit of clients, the climate, the environment and the local community in perpetuity. A typical mix of native UK, broadleaved trees will be planted here over the next two years including oak, ash, beech, willow, cherry and field maple, as well as suitable understorey like thorn, hazel and viburnum.
