Black Mulberry Tree
Shakespeare brought the fable of the Mulberry tree into one of his classic tales, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The mulberry was once white, but became reddened by the blood of Thisbe and Pyramus the tragic lovers. They were going to meet under the tree, but Thisbe who arrived first became scared by a lion and ran away. She dropped her veil which the lion smeared in blood. When Pyramus found it he believed Thisbe to be dead, and so killed himself. When Thisbe came back she committed suicide.
