Learning in the great outdoors- it's the best classroom of all and the independent Preparatory school at King's Hall in Taunton has the perfect setting with its own woodlands, where the Forest School ethos is very much part of the every day curriculum, particularly for the youngest children. Building dens and campfires for cooking, scrambling over tree roots and balancing on logs, stomping in puddles and squelching through mud, rolling around in a bed of leaves or creating an outdoor picture with natural 'found' materials- this is the environment which is a classroom in its own right.Every child from the age of three to seven takes part in the Forest School sessions in the superb school woodland grounds. Forest School is a carefully co-ordinated part of the curriculum. Whatever the weather or season, the children learn to adapt to the natural environment around them. There are plenty of opportunities for team- building, with challenges such as making a den or leading a friend 'blindfold' on a trail. Manipulative skills are developed through sawing and whittling elder; tying tarpaulin and threading and decorating name tags from wood and feathers. Campfires are built and tended, on which bread is toasted or marshmallows cooked and hot drinks can be prepared to be drunk sitting around the warmth on a cold day.

King's Hall Forest School is inspirational and challenging. The main philosophy is to encourage and inspire children from as young as three to grow in confidence and independence and develop a real sense of worth. It is personally and socially uplifting, so laying firm foundations for other learning. All aspects of the curriculum form an integral part of delivery.... truly " where the classroom does not end at the door."
